BARÐI JÓHANNSSON - Music to slit your wrists to

...And no, that's not a bad thing.

I've been a fan of Bardi Johannsson for quite a while.
Since I first heard of the Bang Gang - which I'm not entirely sure where I came across that.
The music was beautifully written and the lyrics found a way to burrow into my heart.

But let me tell you a little about him.
Bardi Johannsson is a little known Icelandic artist. He's a composer and producer ; having done work everywhere from commercials, to films, to tv shows,to theater,  to both producing and writing for other artists.
He's also known for his work with his band "Bang Gang" and also on his side project "Lady & Bird" with Keren Ann.

"Bang Gang" has produced 3 albums entitled : "You", "Something Wrong" and their newest release, "Ghosts from the Past". Having spent numerous hours listening to all three, there is a definite difference in the maturity of both the music and the lyrical composition on "Something Wrong". And that is even furthered on the release "Ghosts from the Past".

Many songs from both "Something Wrong" and "Ghosts from the past" are featured on Bardi's side project (La Ballade of Lady & Bird - by Lady & Bird) with artist, Keren Ann. This album is a thing of beauty. The album was recorded live on BBC with the Icelandic orchestra at the helm. The notes are somber and have a haunting effect to them. One that finds its way into your bones. The collaboration also featured songs written by Keren Ann (such as "Sailor & Widow", a personal favorite, which can be found on her solo album "Not going Anywhere").

One of his finest accomplishments, merely in my opinion, was his soundtrack for the silent film "HAXAN".
It's an absolute masterpiece.
It seems that within most modern music it's difficult to find an artist who is talented enough to invoke such strong emotions strictly through instrumentals. Classical has gotten a bad rap in recent years and has adopted a stigma of being "boring".
Sure, there are no catchy lyrics, no riffs, no booty shaking or other flashy nonsense. But sometimes, isn't it nice to have something sweet in your ear that lets you actually think, actually FEEL what the music is saying? Something that isn't TELLING you how to respond to it?

We've been lucky enough to be given another instrumental taste of Bardi Johannsson's incredible skill with his latest release, "Selected film & theater works".

It encompasses much of his unreleased work as well as a track from "HAXAN".
I make no bones about it, this is definitely a somber album and not for the faint of heart. Every note has the ability to find that one spot inside your heart you've ignored. Every sad emotion or any self doubt you may have ever had. It's an amazingly emotionally driven and masterfully produced piece.
Even in it's sad undertones, it somehow musters your creativity and your ability to over-come.
This album is not meant to listened to as individual singles - it's meant to be listened to from beginning to end. It's meant to be enjoyed.

If you're interested in listening to clips of every track on the new album, they're available on this link.

As per usual, I strongly urge against illegal downloading - please purchase the album(s).
I have provided links with each album name above to itunes. The reason I have not provided a link for a physical copy is due the difficulty of importing the albums. However, if you are interested in purchasing a physical copy of any of the above albums, some are available through Amazon.com. Your local music store will also be able to get you copies as well.

Cursive

To those of you who actually know me, you know that it's been a relatively bad week.
Well, lets be honest, it's been a relatively bad couple of months.

Despite all the bad, all the tears, and all the sleepless nights this week, I did something I've always wanted to do tonight - I got to see Cursive play live.

I've been listening to their albums for years, memorizing their lyrics and spent many afternoons singing along at the top of my lungs.
I never thought, in my wildest dreams that I would get the opportunity to see them play live - or get to shake the hand of Mister Tim Kasher himself.

Upon arriving at the venue I was stopped at the first set of doors before the stairs.
Apparently they were doing a head count for the evening in case they reached capacity. I was a bit bothered by their persistence with seeing my ID. It normally gets checked at the doorway at the bottom of the stairs. I oblige them and head downstairs.
Upon reaching the landing I see someone sporting a "staff" shirt that I simply could've done without seeing. This guy is the biggest prick I've ever met and I'm unsure why the owner (and my friend) hired this guy for the show. I'm hoping he's not a permanent fixture.
Although there's another bouncer/staff at the door, Mr.Prick decides that my bag needs to be checked. There's no reason for this other than to get an excuse to touch me, my things and perhaps attempt to exchange words with me.

I oblige his request because I have to and open my bag. He starts to dig through it rampantly as though he's looking for something in particular. The only things in my bag are:
-"The Ugly Organ" by Cursive on LP
-My wallet
-My house keys
-A permanent Marker
-Camera
-Lipgloss
That's it. Nothing else.
So explain to me why he was digging in my bag for almost 5 minutes?
I got sick of this bullshit, pulled my bag away and told him he was done.
Threw my ticket at the one guy, got a stamp from the other and headed towards the bar.
Figured I may as well grab a beer if I have to wait another 30 mins for Cursive to take the stage.

The show was AMAZING.
Everything I could've hoped and dreamed.
But it didnt' stop there.
After they were done the set I waited patiently.
I needed to meet them. I had waited for years to shake Tim's hand & tell him that I think he's a lyrical genius. I couldn't miss this one opportunity.

One girl and some indie hipster idiot were bothering/talking to him so I stood quietly, starry eyed with my LP in hand waiting for a clear moment to grab his attention.

He seemed relieved when he saw the LP in my hand and was a pleasure.
We talked, I shook his hand and blubbered about how talented I think he is.
He even got the rest of the band to sign it for me, with the exception of the drummer because he was MIA somewhere.
Regardless, it was a good evening and one that I needed right now.
I only wish ***** could've been there, I know he would have appreciated it. :(

Regardless, here's my newest addition to my LP wall of fame that resides in my apartment.
She will never be played again.

Marilyn Manson live webcast tonight

I got sent a link to a live Marilyn Manson webcast tonight.
I was terribly excited since there are so many pending questions that he hasn't answered or gone public on, from information about the new album, to Ginger Fish leaving the band, to his new book, to the new band line up to his new union with Cooking Vinyl.
It's also been a while since I've seen him in a real interview and not just a clip from a public outing.

I logged in and started watching.
I wasn't impressed at all but figured it would get better....
so I kept watching.
and watching.
An hour went by.
Still not an actual conversation or any actual questions got asked.
It was more like watching a home video of you and your friends have a "philosophical" conversation while drunk about the universe and it's meaning. I remained faithful that he would eventually get to the point and let us all know the answers to the many pressing questions.

But he never did.
Nothing ever happened.
It was the biggest waste of time I've ever experienced.

I can't seem to shrug the feeling of disappointment I'm feeling regarding the entire situation.
How can it be that nearly 17 years later he's managed to completely revert back to the immaturity I would have expected from him in the beginning? Even back in '94, he never would have presented himself in such a way.
It was disappointing that he didnt' take advantage of the captive audience he had. At one point there were over 3000 viewers watching. That's 3000 fans desperately grasping for information.
Needless to say, there are over 3000 people who closed the link and said "WTF?".
It would have been a great opportunity to promote the new album, and to promote his new book.
Instead, he choose to piss it away (Piss being the topic at one point).

Another thing that is making me feel uneasy is his appearance.
Not so much just his, but a reflection on myself. He looks so much older, in every possible way.
So tired.
And it made me think about how much I've changed since I started listening to him when I was 13.
I've got stretch marks, spider veins, wrinkles and have noticed the increasing visibility of my veins on the surface of my hands -a definite sign of aging. It's really scary the more I sit and think about it.
I realize that worrying about something I can't avoid or change is in vain.

But back to the real topic at hand...
The webcast.
When the "interview" ended I found myself just sitting here staring at the screen.
Was that really all there was?
A bunch of yelling, jumping around and pointless gibberish?
I really expected more.
If this is a sign of the type of attitude that's going to be coming forth on the new album, then for the first time in 17 years, I might not be interested.

Bright Eyes > Death Cab for Cutie

I just arrived home from the Bright Eyes and Death Cab show.
The show started at 7:30pm.
I thought it would be insane for Bright Eyes to take the stage at 7:30pm since they shouldn't even be opening for this horribly boring band to begin with - but much to my surprise, Conor Oberst and friends hit the stage at 7:30pm sharp.

They sounded fantastic and played almost everything I had always wanted to hear them play.
As a devoted fan, at every show I tote along my copy of "lifted" on LP in the hopes of one day getting it signed. I've come so close a couple of times but it was never appropriate to ask him.
So, tonight during Death Cab's excruciating 2+ hour set, Connor came out to watch the show. I'm not sure why since he played with them last night and I'm sure he saw them then. Anyhow, he was standing right by us.
I found myself more interested in watching him than watching Death Cab.
After much contemplation I got up and approached him.
I politely tapped him on the shoulder and told him how happy I was with the show.
I then apologized for interrupting him watching the show and asked if he might be able to sign my LP for me. He smiled and said he would do it after the show no problem.

The show ended.
He disappeared.
I stood broken hearted with my LP in hand and was shafted by him for the 4th time.
I know the he doesn't have to oblige fans, but christ, I have EVERY single thing he's ever released. Even under different band names.
I've always been polite when asking and really, it would have taken him less than 30 seconds to do. I would have really appreciated it.
I can't help but feel a bit disappointed.

Long story short....Bright Eyes was amazing though they only played for an hour.
Death Cab's own fans were falling asleep by the time they were done.
It was painful to watch.

Volatile Times release

Volatile Times Release

Via Chris Corner:

"Hello my friends
Today we release Volatile Times.
I want you all to know that I am very excited and, as always, feeling somewhat sick in the knowledge that a piece of me is going out into the world to be analysed, criticised and loved.
But overall I am proud of the record despite my previous psychotic blog.
And it is sad that music these days is instantly downloadable. This will make it very difficult for us to survive. We know that. You know that. Blah blah blah.

There are always parasites that think they deserve art for free and live off other peoples energy. And I refer to the person that uploaded the album before the release. I am used to this. Ignorance does not surprise me anymore.
But I trust YOU my friends. I consider you close to my heart. That you have supported this project so intensely gives me goose pimples every time I think about it and when we receive messages like this one below I remember that I do have faith in people.

Hi
I have guiltily downloaded the album early and already.
I don’t want to pay postage or hurt the environment with my consumption…
Can I make an honest payment by other means as I would have bought the album. If you give me bank details I will send 12 Euro today.
Fantastic work, really fantastic.
Kindest regards  Rowan

A small note to our fans in UK, US and Canada.
We are trying very hard to get a solid release in your territories and also to set up some shows. It seems harder than ever to make it happen on our indie budget. The only real way to secure this in the future is for you to buy the record. We just cannot afford it and nobody with big pockets seems to be interested in challenging music anymore. That is the reality of the situation.
We will update you as soon as there is news.
So, whiskey raised and downed,  lets all do what we can to keep the spirit alive.
Much love and respect.

chrisx"

Please purchase the album!!!!!

Bright Eyes- The People's Key

Holy shit it's here.
Today is finally the day.
I've been a very patient girl and it finally paid off.

Not only is it the release of "The People's Key" by Bright Eyes, but also it's Conor Oberst's 31st birthday today!!!!
So a big Happy Birthday to a fantastically talented individual and one I can't imagine not having the delight to listen to.

The Melting Point of Wax - Thrice

The Melting Point of Wax - Thrice
(From the album:  The artist in the ambulance)

I've waited for this moment
All my life and more
And now I see so clearly
What I could not see before.
The time is now or never
This chance won't come again
Throw caution and myself into the wind.

There's no promise of safety with these secondhand wings
But I'm willing to find out what impossible means.

A leap of faith.

Parody of an angel
Miles above the sea
I hear the voice of reason
Screaming after me
"You've flown far too high boy now you're too close to the sun,
Soon your makeshift wings will come undone"

But how will I know limits from lies if I never try?

There's no promise of safety with these secondhand wings
But I'm willing to find out what impossible means.
I'll climb through the heavens on feathers and dreams
'Cause the melting point of wax means nothing to me.
Nothing to me
Nothing to me

I will touch the sun or I will die trying.
Die Trying.

Fly on these secondhand wings
Willing to find out what impossible means
I'll climb through the heavens on feathers and dreams
'Cause the melting point of wax means nothing to me
Nothing to me
Means nothing to me
Miles above the sea.
